July 15-26, 2017, the Nicaragua North District received a group of 18 Nazarenes from Colorado, USA. They came to serve in several different projects. It was made possible thanks to the help of the Casa Unida Foundation.

The group began the construction of the first phase of the church building for the Church of the Nazarene in the community of Rodeo. They helped with manual labor and economic resources. They also helped to deliver 27 water filters to 27 different families in the communities of El Rodeo and Los Ranchos. The purpose is to increase access to clean water and diminish the risk of water-borne illnesses.

The group also visited 4 secondary schools in the communities of Telpaneca, Totogalpa, Las Sabanas and San Lucas. They donated packages of baseball equipment that contained gloves, bats, shoes, balls and helmets. Each school held a presentation event that the authorities from the ministry of education and local government, physical education instructors and youth baseball teams attended. They were grateful since they needed the equipment included in the packages. The teams had been using balls made from socks and homemade bats.

Bob Moore, president of the Casa Unida Foundation, as a symbolic act told the physical education instructors, “ We are going to make a trade. You give me the ball made from a sock and the homemade bat and I’ll give you a good ball and an aluminum bat.” He added, “We brought this donation so the school would have the materials necessary to encourage the development of baseball.” He emphasized that the donation was not to the students or teachers but to the school as a whole to encourage sports.

The group also lead Bible school in the following communities: Ocotal, Motuse, Rodeo and Sonís. 350 children attended.
